Dynamite: Soaring on Silver Wings

Recently I had the opportunity to soar above the clouds and watch majestic mountain ranges float by beneath me. As I was contemplating the amazing miracle of aerodynamics and the concept of being suspended in the sky, a train of thought started churning its wheels…

If I tried to break a window, jump out of the plane and fly, I'd be pronouncing my death sentence.

If I walked into the cockpit and started pushing buttons and levers because I thought we were going the wrong direction, I'd probably get myself in a predicament, dead or alive, that wouldn't be enviable.

Why? Because I have no knowledge of flying.

Later that week the same thought train picked up speed after reading this verse:

"Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." {2 Corinthians 12:10}

Familiar? Yes, I'm sure it is for most people. I know I've read or heard it at least a hundred times.
Yet sometimes we never slow down enough to really internalize, really grasp the significance

I turned to the literal Greek translation of this verse, eager to gain a deeper blessing.
And as I read through the Strong's definitions of the key words, I was struck by the poignancy of this concept.

Allow me to share my literal translation of this verse…

"This is the reason that I take delight in being left without strength, being the recipient of stinging insults, experiencing hardships, being chased and forced into narrow corners and situations for Christ's sake; because it's when I have no strength left that I am dynamite." {Glesni's Literal Translation}

Going back to the airplane analogy, it's when I realize that I can't fly by myself…
when I admit I don't even know how to guide the plane or run the controls…
when I merely sit back and admit that I know nothing — that's when I soar on silver wings.

This is how my life becomes dynamite.

Weak Hands, Feeble Knees

It's dark outside. Soft light streams over my shoulders. I love new mornings. My eyes scan the page as I absorb verse after verse.

The guidelines for the race. The provisions for the runner. These things call my attention.

I haven't run a race in a long time. At least an official one.
But I know the exertion, the endurance, the positive morale needed to finish any endeavor.

And I stop to think of races I have participated in or observed. Something disturbs me.
Each runner is only running for himself.

He has the end goal continually before him. But he has no concern for the other runners.
His only concern is to win.

But we run a race in which all can be winners.
And we have no right to run past those who are weak just because we are stronger.

No right at all.

Instead we are obligated to lift up weary hands and feeble knees. Because we are not in this race for ourselves.
We have a duty to help those that are struggling to run beside us.

It would be a terrible thing to run through those gates of pearl alone.
Lord, give me eyes to see, lips to speak, hands to heal. And them to me today…

Strength Costs

The clock ticks loud seconds away behind me. My arms and legs pulse to constant rhythm. Heavy breathing. Aching muscles. Active mind.

Strength comes at a price.
Discipline. Determination. Sacrifice.

Light bulb moment in the basement.

My strength — it’s not mine at all. It comes at a price.

Sacrifice is the buzz word.

If He hadn’t determined to sacrifice, if He hadn’t determined to give His life, my strength would be nothingness.

Of course my strength is always nothingness, but there would be no alternative. No strength to infuse power into my weakness.

Yes, strength comes at a price.

The price of sacrifice.

Yokes of Love

{Jeremiah 26-28}

Sometimes God has to take radical measures.
Sometimes our hearts are too stubborn to be sensitized and softened by gentler means.
Sometimes it takes a yoke of iron…

He pleads. He intreats. He promises.
Yet sometimes words just fly past our shoulders.

I think the concept of being yoked has become distorted. We tend to see the negative connotations when that is only part of the definition.

In reality though, a yoke is merely an instrument used to harmonize the work of two into one. To find surpassing strength of two combined rather than one alone. To give greater power, greater synergy and accomplish greater results.

It may be that we break the wooden yoke, yet God just gently replaces it with an iron one. Not in a tyrannical display, but in love alone. The yoke has a purpose in our training.

And isn’t that truly what I desire? To be so yoked with Christ that my every act is in harmony with Him? To find His surpassing strength and the results that accompany it?

He is Everything… (And INFC pictures)

If there is something that has rebounded into my consciousness time after time during the past week, it is this…

God is everything.

From wakening me renewed hours before dawn day after day…
To stretching cuisine further than we deemed possible…
To the dozens of willing hands and cheerful hearts who volunteered to lighten our burden every meal…
To hearts touched and lives convicted (including my own)…
To miracles everywhere I turned…

Yes, He yet again proved Himself capable of doing above and beyond my wildest dreams. Sustaining when I deserved to be exhausted, giving when I didn't deserve to receive, encouraging when I felt drained, and so much more…

And I am reminded once again that He is everything to me.

Yes, everything…

Cause Them to Know

{Jeremiah 16}

Horrible things. Absolutely horrible.

Degrading. Defiling. Desecrating. Defaming. And ultimately, destroying…
They have sinned big-time. And they deserve their punishment.

But even though God declares that He shall first doubly recompense their evil, He promises to show mercy still

Echoes from history mostly forgotten by Jews of their current society reverberate in the words uttered.
He will yet again cause them to know… To know His hand. His might. His name.

His hand… yes, the hands scarred forever. Engraved with my name, your name… A perpetual reminder of His grace, His sacrifice, His love.

His might… Strength Himself employed to break our chains, to make us free

His name… a character so perfect that sin cannot remain in its presence. Yet He delights to call us by His name.* He rejoices to cover us with His spotless robe and call us to perfection.

Those three elements are the secret to breaking bonds of sin.
Forgiveness and cleansing are not the work of lifetimes, but moments

Yes, scars take time to heal…
But chains take only moments to break if we will but realize His intense love and plead for His rescue.

Examine His hand. Claim His might. Receive His name.

He will cause you to know… Him.

*{2 Chronicles 7:14; Isaiah 43:7}
